Fabric Collage depicting a maternal figure braiding a small child's hair

Saturday Night Ritual

The recollection of the intimacy shared between a black maternal figure and child during braiding hair. Black hair care is a very time consuming, intricate, and often painful process. It takes a large amount of trust to subject yourself to someone’s hands in your hair for such a procedure. As a child you have no say in who braids your hair so a very special relationship is formed during getting your hair done. It is an experience that parallels with spiritual ritual or meditation. This piece is largely made up of different fabrics sewn together. There is also braided yarn for hair. The Hair Braider’s face is entirely embroidered.
